greg-sensei-japan > This is Masa, the chef at the local sushi bar. He's a great laugh and not really your typical reserved Japanese. He's been really good to me since I've been in Japan and has taken me out to karaoke, bars and restaurants many times, and generally helped me to get involved in the village life as much as possible.

I probably average about 3 or 4 visits to his place a week.

He took me fishing last summer and we went out a couple of miles offshore in his friend's boat. We'd been out drinking together the previous night until 1am and fishing started only 5 hours later at 6am. He started drinking immediately and gave me plenty of stick when I finally succumbed to sea sickness. I'd already bagged myself 3 fish by then so I was satisfied with my first fishing trip.

I eventually felt so rough that he called a friend of his to come out to us on a speed boat and take me back to shore. His friend arrived within 5 minutes of him making the phone call - this man's got connections!
greg-sensei-japan > Masa with the sushi knife.
greg-sensei-japan > This is Masa's son Seya. He's incredibly shy so pretty the exact opposite of his father. He's a really sweet kid and always shakes my hand or does high fives whenever he sees me.
greg-sensei-japan > This is the assistant chef Masa-Ryu, and Masa's (the other one) wife, Naomi.
greg-sensei-japan > Masa-Ryu looking knackered after a long day's work. The people on my island, Kyushu, are famous for their drinking and both the two Masa's usually finish the day by drinking or going to another bar or restaurant. They start the next day at the crack of dawn as well in order to buy the day's catch from the fisherman.
greg-sensei-japan > Masa with his daughter.

greg-sensei-japan > Extreme close up of Masa-Ryu.
greg-sensei-japan > Masa-Ryu giving me a thrashing at arm-wrestling. I'm yet to win a single bout with either Masa-Ryu or the head chef, Masa-Hiro.

Masa-Ryu is a black belt in Shaolin whereas Masa-Hiro is a former Kendo teacher. I think, it's fair to say, that most would struggle against them!

Update - as of the beginning of May '06 Masa-Ryu is infallible no more! Michael came over for a visit in Golden Week and wowed the locals with a 2-1 defeat of Masa-Ryu. The name of Michael Jordan will go down as legend in Shikamachi for years to come!
